Imagine a park and trees, some characters taken from theatre and intimate conversations exchanged between suitors and courtesans. The magical world of Antoine Watteau is immediately recognisable. Although the collection has plenty of drawings by this great master, it lacks a painting by the same artist. Edouard André, who liked this school, nevertheless succeeded in buying significant compositions from his workshop: here a canvas by one of the more inspired of his pupils, Jean-Baptiste Pater.
